Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal has given in principle approval for the preparation of a National Rabies Prevention and Control Framework after a delegation of The Indus Hospital and Health Network met him to discuss urgent measures for preventing and controlling rabies in Pakistan.<\/p>\n
The delegation, led by Chief Executive Officer Dr Abdul Bari Khan, briefed the minister on the current rabies situation in the country and stressed the need for immediate national level action to reduce preventable deaths.<\/p>\n
According to the briefing, Pakistan does not have an effective national system for rabies surveillance. However, available estimates suggest that nearly 5,000 people die of rabies every year, while hundreds of thousands of dog bite cases are reported annually.<\/p>\n
The delegation informed the minister that children, rural communities and deprived populations living in urban outskirts remain among the most affected groups.<\/p>\n
Mustafa Kamal expressed deep concern over the growing burden of rabies in Pakistan and said a National Technical Working Advisory Group would soon be formed to lead the preparation of the national framework.<\/p>\n
He also called for a countrywide awareness campaign to protect people from the preventable disease and underlined the need for coordinated action by the federal government, provincial governments and technical partners to eliminate avoidable rabies deaths in Pakistan.<\/p>\n
The minister appreciated the province wide anti rabies campaign launched under the leadership of the Sindh chief minister. He also acknowledged the technical support provided by The Indus Hospital and Health Network for rabies prevention and control.<\/p>\n
On the occasion, Dr Abdul Bari Khan presented the federal minister with the Sindh Official Guidelines for Prevention of Human Rabies 2024<\/em>, prepared with technical assistance from The Indus Hospital and Health Network.<\/p>\n Mustafa Kamal also paid tribute to the late Professor Naseem Salahuddin, expressing grief over her death and offering condolences to her family.
