RAWALPINDI: Experts at a dialogue titled \u201cWomen and Water\u201d held at Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, called for placing women at the centre of water management, climate adaptation and decision-making processes.<\/p>\n
They said sustainable water systems could not be developed, nor could climate crises be tackled effectively, without the meaningful participation of women.<\/p>\n
The dialogue was organised by Shehersaaz under its Project for Urban Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience (PUCCA-R). Water experts, academics, environmental activists and community representatives attended the event.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the occasion, Shehersaaz Executive Director Almas Shakoor said building the capacity of local institutions and communities was an urgent need to address climate challenges such as water scarcity, floods and droughts in Rawalpindi and Nowshera.<\/p>\n
Participants expressed concern that existing national data on water did not fully reflect the problems faced by women, girls and marginalised groups. They called for comprehensive gender-based data collection at the local level to support water planning and policymaking.<\/p>\n
The speakers also voiced concern over the rapidly growing urban population, conversion of agricultural land into residential areas and the continuous decline in groundwater levels. They stressed the need for rainwater harvesting, use of modern water technologies, private sector cooperation and promotion of research with educational institutions.<\/p>\n
The dialogue noted that although women carry the primary responsibility for household-level water use and management, their representation in water-related policymaking and decision-making remains very limited. Participants said increasing women\u2019s role was essential for an effective and sustainable water system.<\/p>\n
They also recommended including environmental education in the curriculum at the primary level and promoting water-saving habits among children.<\/p>\n
On the occasion, Shehersaaz introduced a symbolic character named \u201cDroppy\u201d for an awareness campaign on water conservation.<\/p>\n
At the conclusion of the dialogue, participants underlined the need for effective cooperation among the government, educational institutions, civil society and local communities. They said women and marginalised groups must be made an essential part of water management and decision-making to respond to the challenges of climate change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
