ISLAMABAD: Principal Information Officer (PIO) Reesa Adil visited the National Press Club (NPC) Islamabad, where she held a special interaction with women journalists and assured support for addressing their professional issues.<\/p>\n
On her arrival at the press club, she was warmly received by NPC President Abdul Razzaq Sial, Secretary Dr Furqan Rao, Finance Secretary Abid Abbasi and women office-bearers.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the session, Reesa Adil said training programmes for journalists would be launched in collaboration with the Pakistan Information Service Academy. She said the courses would focus on freelancing, digital media, climate reporting and modern journalistic skills to help journalists keep pace with the changing media landscape.<\/p>\n
She said the media was rapidly moving into the digital era, making capacity building of journalists, particularly women journalists, an important need of the time. The PIO said she would effectively convey the issues of women journalists to the relevant authorities and extend all possible cooperation.<\/p>\n
Reesa Adil also highlighted the need for facilities at the National Press Club for women journalists, including a separate ladies\u2019 room, a rest area and day-care facilities for children. She assured the participants that these proposals would be raised at the relevant forums.<\/p>\n
The meeting also discussed proposals for accreditation cards for women journalists, health cards, accreditation cards for digital journalists and the establishment of a Women Journalists Help Desk at the Press Information Department to address pending matters concerning women journalists. Reesa Adil assured the participants of her support on these suggestions.<\/p>\n
She said assuming the responsibility of PIO was both an honour and a major responsibility. She added that the government and the media were partners and there was a need to further strengthen trust and communication between them so that accurate and responsible information could reach the public.<\/p>\n
NPC President Abdul Razzaq Sial thanked the PIO for visiting the press club and briefed her on the steps taken by the club for its women members and members in general. He said women journalists were playing an important role in the media, but they faced challenges such as job insecurity, low salaries, layoffs, limited training opportunities and lack of facilities at workplaces.<\/p>\n
He said the NPC had organised a month-long training workshop for capacity building of its members, which was attended by a large number of participants.<\/p>\n
NPC Secretary Dr Furqan Rao welcomed the PIO and said the press club organised training workshops for both male and female members so they could perform their professional responsibilities in a better manner. He urged the government to take effective steps for resolving the issues faced by women journalists.<\/p>\n
Finance Secretary Abid Abbasi also thanked the PIO for visiting the press club and said a large number of women associated with different media houses were members of the NPC.<\/p>\n
Senior Vice President Ihtisham ul Haq, Vice President Bashir Chaudhry, Senior Joint Secretary Shiraz Gardezi, Joint Secretary Syed Aun Shirazi, Governing Body members Amir Rafiq Butt, Farah Rabbani and Ayesha Naz, former Governing Body member Naveed Ahmed Sheikh, members of the governing body and a large number of women members of the NPC and journalists from various media organisations were present.<\/p>\n
Former NPC secretary Nayyar Ali, Joint Secretary Sehrish Qureshi, Joint Secretary Shakila Jalil, senior journalist Fauzia Kulsoom Rana and others also spoke on the occasion and presented their suggestions.<\/p>\n
Later, a question-and-answer session was held between women journalists and the PIO, during which participants discussed possible solutions to various problems faced by women in journalism, including difficulties in obtaining accreditation cards.<\/p>\n
