According to the World Health Organization, more than 246,000 newborns die each year from preventable complications, an average of about 675 infants a day during their first month of life. Limited access to modern neonatal facilities outside major urban centers is a major factor in this crisis, and the new NICU in Hyderabad aims to close that gap.

The new unit is equipped with specialized technical facilities, including modern oxygen therapies for infants with severe respiratory problems, and offers critical procedures and treatments that can save lives. By providing timely, high-quality care close to home, the NICU is expected to reduce delays in treatment, ease the financial and logistical burden on parents, and give vulnerable newborns a stronger start.

“This new NICU is a beacon of hope for countless families,” said Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Ali Shoro at the opening. “It will save lives and bring lifesaving care closer to residents of Hyderabad and the surrounding areas.”

Dr Farhat Abbas, Chief Executive Officer of Aga Khan University Health Services, Pakistan, emphasized the unit’s role in addressing preventable newborn deaths: “Many newborns in Pakistan die simply because specialized care is not available near where they are born. This NICU will ensure that preterm and critically ill babies in Hyderabad and nearby districts receive the same high standard of care that saves lives in larger cities.”

Since joining the Aga Khan University Hospital network in 2010, the Aga Khan Maternal and Child Care Centre has built a reputation as a trusted provider of women’s and children’s health services. The centre holds SafeCare Level 5 certification, an international recognition for patient safety and quality of care. Building on this foundation, the new NICU represents a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to strengthen neonatal care in the region.

“AKMCCC’s new NICU is a major step toward bringing specialized neonatal care closer to home,” said Dr Miraj Shah, Chief Operating Officer of Aga Khan University Hospital. “Our goal is to provide timely, quality care and make this centre a hub of excellence for women and children.”

The opening ceremony was attended by civic leaders, senior representatives from the Sindh Health Care Commission, and Aga Khan University Hospital leadership and physicians, underscoring a shared commitment to improving maternal and child health services in the area.

Aga Khan Maternal and Child Care Centre in Hyderabad has opened a modern Level II neonatal intensive care unit, bringing advanced lifesaving care for newborns to families in Hyderabad and surrounding districts and reducing the need for long trips to Karachi or other cities.
