She described the appointment as “the honour of my life” and pledged to work each day to keep the country safe. The Home Secretary role gives her responsibility for policing, immigration, and national security.

Mahmood was born in Birmingham to parents from Mirpur in Azad Kashmir and spent part of her childhood in Saudi Arabia before returning to the UK. She studied law at Lincoln College, Oxford, and trained as a barrister, practising in professional indemnity cases. She was later elected Member of Parliament for Birmingham Ladywood, becoming one of the first female Muslim MPs, and has since held a series of senior positions within the Labour Party.

In government, Mahmood most recently served as Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, where she focused on reducing prison overcrowding and tackling the backlog in the courts. She introduced a set of reforms aimed at improving prison conditions and speeding up case processing, themes she is expected to carry into her new brief.

As Home Secretary she will face major challenges, including overseeing migration and asylum policy, maintaining public safety, and managing national security risks. Mahmood has said she supports fair but robust immigration rules that encourage integration while upholding strict standards. She has also proposed changes to the European Convention on Human Rights intended to restore public confidence in the system.

Mahmood’s career has not been without hostility. She has frequently faced harassment and intimidation, including targeted attacks from elements within the local Pakistani community and from far-right extremists. She has pointed to social media as a platform for misinformation and personal attacks, and has said her identity as a Muslim woman only strengthens her resolve to serve.

On foreign policy, Mahmood has drawn attention to the humanitarian impact of the Gaza crisis, stressing protection for children and reiterating support for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Her appointment has been welcomed across Labour’s ranks; Lord Glasman, founder of the Blue Labour movement, called the selection “fantastic” and suggested Mahmood could be a future leader of the party.

Mahmood’s elevation to Home Secretary is being seen as a historic milestone for diversity and representation in UK politics, reflecting the growing presence of women and ethnic minorities in senior leadership roles.

Shabana Mahmood has been appointed Home Secretary by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, becoming the first person of Pakistani and Muslim heritage to hold one of the United Kingdom’s most senior and influential government posts.
