The National Assembly\u2019s Standing Committee on Water Resources heard a briefing on the extensive damage caused by recent floods and directed government agencies to provide more detailed information and briefings at its next session. Lawmakers were told the floods caused large-scale loss of life, injuries, and widespread damage to roads, bridges, homes and livestock, and the committee demanded full accounts of breached protection works and a comprehensive presentation from the meteorological service.<\/p>\n
At the sixth meeting of the committee, chaired by Ahmed Ateeq Anwer, a representative of the Ministry of Water Resources presented cumulative figures for the flood damage. The ministry reported 985 fatalities, 1,062 injured, destruction of 6,748 kilometres of roads, collapse or loss of 29 bridges, damage to 8,481 houses, and the death of 6,509 heads of livestock.<\/p>\n
Committee members were told that floodplain maps were originally developed in 2016 using satellite data in collaboration with relevant departments. Since then, only Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have made significant progress in updating or further developing those maps; other provinces have not advanced the work.<\/p>\n
The committee directed the Pakistan Meteorological Department to deliver a comprehensive briefing at the next meeting covering its functions, performance and achievements, to help improve forecasting and early-warning coordination.<\/p>\n
Officials also informed the committee that six sections of flood protection infrastructure had been breached. Members asked the ministry to provide complete details of those breaches at the next session so the scope of repair and reconstruction needs can be assessed.<\/p>\n
