Ultimately, there’s a very fine line between this proverb and the existing situation in Pakistan, where millions of young girls are being denied their basic right to education. The consequences are horrible: early marriages, poor health outcomes, and the sustenance of intergenerational poverty.

Education is beyond literacy; it is empowerment. An educated girl will be able to avoid situations that would otherwise compel her to marry prematurely. Rather, she will land herself a decent job, support her family, and raise healthy, educated kids. So, by educating one girl, an entire community is uplifted.

Unfortunately, poverty, damaging traditions, and unsafe schools are towering obstacles. Families often perceive early marriages to be some sort of economic relief. In rural settings, problems are even graver—the absence of female teachers, long distances to travel, and unsafe environments discourage girls from going to school.

The way ahead truly calls for a fast-track response. The government ought to invest in rural schools, scholarships, and safe transportation. Civil society and communities need to challenge cultural practices that impede opportunities for girls. Above all, we must recognize that girls’ education is not charity—it is justice and a fundamental right.

By empowering girls through education, we break the cycle of poverty and delay early marriages. The future of Pakistan depends on classrooms filled with confident, educated girls ready to lead the nation forward.

Empowering Girls Through Education: A Tool Against Poverty and Early Marriage By Dr. Asma Fatima Makhdoom “If you educate a man, you educate an individual.
