The meeting highlighted the scale of disruption as millions were left homeless, crops and livestock destroyed, and communities exposed to disease and rising poverty.

The Acting President underlined the urgent need for real-time assistance and long-term rehabilitation across flood-hit areas, with particular concern for South Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said that immediate relief must be paired with programmes that prevent malnutrition and protect children, and he welcomed the role of WFP Pakistan in scaling nutritional support and emergency supplies.

Gilani stressed the role of parliamentary diplomacy in building partnerships that address these challenges. He proposed strengthening coordination between WFP Pakistan and Parliament so that interventions are better informed, targeted and reach the most vulnerable at the grassroots level. He also urged direct communication channels between the organisation and parliamentary representatives to improve needs assessment and resource allocation.

The Acting President and the WFP country director discussed existing programmes such as Nashonuma and the school nutrition initiative, and the need to expand these services in flood-affected districts. They highlighted the importance of protecting child nutrition and addressing stunting through collaboration with the Benazir Income Support Programme and other national partners.

Looking ahead, both sides called for broadening climate resilience projects, including the Integrated Climate Risk Management programme supported by WFP Pakistan and the Green Climate Fund, to cover flood-prone regions of southern Punjab. Such measures were described as key to improving early warning systems, strengthening resilience and mitigating future risks faced by vulnerable households.

Ms. Ushiyama expressed WFP Pakistan’s commitment to work closely with government bodies and Senate standing committees on health and national food security. The discussion also flagged immediate needs on the ground, including mosquito nets, blankets, quilts and other essential non-food items for displaced families.

The Acting President thanked WFP Pakistan for its continued support and urged greater momentum in relief, rehabilitation and resilience-building efforts to reduce hunger, improve livelihoods and tackle the health burdens emerging after the floods.

WFP Pakistan mobilises urgent flood relief to support homeless families, protect child nutrition and strengthen climate resilience in South Punjab and KP.

[94

post-11887","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pakistan
["GET
