Lahore-born triathlete Shahrez Khan has secured a slot at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship scheduled for November 9, 2025 in Marbella, Spain after a decisive performance at the Puerto Princesa race in the Philippines.<\/p>\n
Shahrez earned seventh place in his age category in a race that demanded a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride and a 21.1 km half marathon, all completed under punishing tropical heat that tested every athlete. The Ironman 70.3 qualification marks a major milestone for Pakistan in global endurance sport.<\/p>\n
‘Crossing that finish line and realizing I’d qualified, it was overwhelming. A moment of pure pride for Pakistan,’ Shahrez said, reflecting on the achievement that also places him among the top 5% of Ironman athletes worldwide in the AWA rankings.<\/p>\n
Shahrez is the son of Aleema Khan and the nephew of former prime minister Imran Khan, but he has built his own sporting identity. An alumnus of Aitchison College, he pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Western Ontario and later completed an MBA at Oxford University, where he ran daily with the Said Business School cross-country team on Christ Church Meadows.<\/p>\n
Professionally Shahrez leads the MENA region for Simba Global, a multinational textile supplier, while balancing an increasingly demanding training schedule. His Ironman journey began in 2022 after a challenging half marathon in Islamabad. Comfortable in running and swimming, Shahrez had to quickly master cycling, building an indoor ‘pain cave’ at his Lahore home to maintain training during smog seasons.<\/p>\n
Outdoor sessions remained essential, with runs through Bagh-e-Jinnah and group cycling in DHA Phase 7. Training intensified to around 18 hours a week during race season, and back-to-back ‘brick workouts’ were used to simulate race-day fatigue and sharpen transition endurance.<\/p>\n
Local partnerships have been pivotal to his progress. Road Rizwan Aftab Ahmed, CEO of ACTIVIT and Director of National Hospital DHA Lahore, has supported Shahrez’s international campaigns and co-organised cross-country camps at Aitchison College to mentor young athletes. Their joint aim is to motivate a generation moving away from sedentary lifestyles by emphasising discipline, resilience and clarity through sport.<\/p>\n
Despite limited triathlon infrastructure in Pakistan, Shahrez believes the country can host world-class events thanks to its mountains, rivers and coastline.
