{"id":12605,"date":"2025-10-15T11:17:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T11:17:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.peakpoint.pk\/en\/2025\/10\/15\/act-now-tobacco-ban-health-warnings\/"},"modified":"2025-10-15T11:22:58","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T11:22:58","slug":"act-now-tobacco-ban-health-warnings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.peakpoint.pk\/en\/2025\/10\/15\/act-now-tobacco-ban-health-warnings\/","title":{"rendered":"Act Now for a Tobacco Ban and Stronger Health Warnings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"136\"><strong><em data-start=\"21\" data-end=\"134\">Murtaza Solangi Urges Complete Ban on Tobacco Advertising and Calls for Stronger Enforcement of Health Warnings<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"136\">ISLAMABAD \u2013 Spokesperson to the President of Pakistan, <strong data-start=\"211\" data-end=\"230\">Murtaza Solangi<\/strong>, has called for a <strong data-start=\"249\" data-end=\"330\">comprehensive ban on Tobacco Advertisement, Promotion, and Sponsorship (TAPS)<\/strong> and urged for <strong data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"403\">stronger enforcement of Graphic Health Warnings (GHWs)<\/strong> to curb the country\u2019s growing tobacco epidemic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"455\" data-end=\"740\">Speaking as Chief Guest at a <strong data-start=\"484\" data-end=\"595\">two-day consultative session organized by the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC)<\/strong> titled <em data-start=\"603\" data-end=\"682\">\u201cWHO Global Tobacco Epidemic Report 2025 and Best Practices on TAPS and GHWs\u201d<\/em>, Mr. Solangi emphasized the urgency of decisive action.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"742\" data-end=\"1138\">He said, \u201cThe latest WHO Global Tobacco Epidemic Report delivers a message that is both stark and urgent: tobacco continues to kill, and if we do not intensify our efforts\u2014particularly through bold actions like banning tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship (TAPS) and increasing the size of graphic health warnings (GHWs)\u2014we will continue to lose lives that could otherwise be saved.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-12607 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.peakpoint.pk\/en\/media\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-10-15-at-4.14.18-PM-300x200.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.peakpoint.pk\/en\/media\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-10-15-at-4.14.18-PM-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.peakpoint.pk\/en\/media\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-10-15-at-4.14.18-PM-1024x682.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.peakpoint.pk\/en\/media\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-10-15-at-4.14.18-PM-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.peakpoint.pk\/en\/media\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-10-15-at-4.14.18-PM.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1140\" data-end=\"1493\">Highlighting the devastating human toll, Solangi pointed out that <strong data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1264\">tobacco kills over 8 million people globally each year<\/strong>, exceeding the combined deaths from <strong data-start=\"1301\" data-end=\"1335\">HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria<\/strong>. He added that Pakistan faces a similarly grim reality, with <strong data-start=\"1397\" data-end=\"1425\">27 million tobacco users<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1430\" data-end=\"1460\">over 166,000 annual deaths<\/strong> from tobacco-related diseases.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1495\" data-end=\"1916\">He further noted that the impact of tobacco extends beyond health\u2014damaging the economy, lowering productivity, and inflicting emotional and financial pain on families. Commending South Asia\u2019s progress where tobacco use has dropped from <strong data-start=\"1731\" data-end=\"1745\">70% to 37%<\/strong>, Solangi expressed optimism that Pakistan could achieve similar success through consistent education campaigns, awareness initiatives, and international best practices.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1923\" data-end=\"2309\">Former Member of the National Assembly <strong data-start=\"1962\" data-end=\"1988\">Dr. Nisar Ahmed Cheema<\/strong> said that beyond the alarming statistics, the growing attraction of tobacco among youth poses a major public health challenge. He highlighted that indirect marketing\u2014through attractive packaging, event sponsorships, and online content\u2014continues to make tobacco appear acceptable or even appealing to younger audiences.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2311\" data-end=\"2614\">Dr. Cheema urged the government to <strong data-start=\"2346\" data-end=\"2392\">enforce stricter bans on all forms of TAPS<\/strong>, emphasizing that \u201clarge, image-based Graphic Health Warnings (GHWs)\u201d can deter new smokers and encourage quitting. He called for <strong data-start=\"2523\" data-end=\"2551\">closing policy loopholes<\/strong> and strengthening laws to counter these promotional tactics.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2621\" data-end=\"3018\"><strong data-start=\"2621\" data-end=\"2647\">Dr. Khalil Ahmad Dogar<\/strong>, Program Manager at SPARC, underscored that despite restrictions, subtle marketing tactics continue to shape consumer behavior. Referring to WHO findings, he stated that countries implementing complete bans on TAPS witness <strong data-start=\"2871\" data-end=\"2924\">significant declines in youth tobacco consumption<\/strong>. \u201cThe time has come for a total ban on all direct and indirect promotional means,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3020\" data-end=\"3340\">He added that robust, periodically updated graphic warnings serve as \u201clife-saving interventions\u201d proven to <strong data-start=\"3127\" data-end=\"3179\">motivate quitting and prevent smoking initiation<\/strong>. While acknowledging Pakistan\u2019s progress, Dr. Khalil urged authorities to \u201cremove the remaining gaps and ensure full enforcement of tobacco control policies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3347\" data-end=\"3730\"><strong data-start=\"3347\" data-end=\"3369\">Faisal Zahid Malik<\/strong>, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of <em data-start=\"3403\" data-end=\"3422\">Pakistan Observer<\/em>, highlighted the <strong data-start=\"3440\" data-end=\"3496\">media\u2019s vital role in shaping public health outcomes<\/strong>. \u201cAt Pakistan Observer, we consider it our duty to use our platform to raise awareness, encourage quitting, and hold all relevant stakeholders accountable for ensuring effective implementation of tobacco control measures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3732\" data-end=\"4160\">Malik urged the media to prioritize integrity over profit, asserting, \u201cWe must choose to protect people over promoting profit.\u201d He concluded by calling for <strong data-start=\"3888\" data-end=\"3918\">collective national action<\/strong>, saying, \u201cThis is a fight we can win\u2014but only if we act together, boldly, and decisively. Government, civil society, media, health professionals, educators, parents, and youth all have a role to play in building a tobacco-free generation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4167\" data-end=\"4616\">The SPARC session brought together <strong data-start=\"4202\" data-end=\"4303\">policymakers, health experts, journalists, youth representatives, and civil society organizations<\/strong>, who jointly reviewed <strong data-start=\"4326\" data-end=\"4411\">Pakistan\u2019s implementation of WHO\u2019s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)<\/strong> and its <strong data-start=\"4420\" data-end=\"4441\">MPOWER strategies<\/strong>.
