\u201cPakistan & South Asia\u201d Group Formed in Washington to Strengthen Regional Cooperation and Peace<\/p>\n
Islamabad, October 2025: A new initiative titled \u201cPakistan and South Asia: Towards Progress, Partnership and Peace\u201d has been launched in Washington, D.C., bringing together diplomats, policymakers, and scholars to promote dialogue, integration, and cooperation among South Asian nations.<\/p>\n
The announcement followed a series of meetings and roundtables held during the first week of October, culminating in a luncheon hosted by Pakistan\u2019s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Rizwan Saeed. Members of the visiting delegation formally briefed the Ambassador on the establishment of a core working group under the new initiative.<\/p>\n
The group is convened by Mr. Imran Shauket, a distinguished development strategist, and includes prominent personalities such as former U.S. Ambassadors, former USAID Mission Directors, Directors of South Asia programs at leading U.S. think tanks, and members of the Pakistani diaspora. The team shares a common background \u2014 extensive experience working in Pakistan and across South Asia.<\/p>\n
Mr. Shauket explained that the initiative seeks to foster dialogue and cooperation among South Asian countries \u2014 beginning with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka \u2014 before expanding to include other regional partners. He emphasized that despite accounting for nearly 25% of the global population, South Asia remains one of the least integrated regions in the world, and there is an urgent need for new frameworks of collaboration that move beyond the limitations of SAARC.<\/p>\n
He noted that while regional integration has proven difficult, sub-regional cooperation remains a viable path forward, allowing nations to work jointly on trade, education, climate resilience, and economic connectivity. The initiative aims to develop confidence-building measures and shared development goals to promote peace and stability across the region.<\/p>\n
The group plans to organize future conferences and policy dialogues involving experts and institutions from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and beyond.
