Ambassador of Romania Dr. Dan Stoenescu held a working meeting with Federal Minister of Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and Karachi Port Trust Chairman Ateeq-ur-Rehman at the KPT Board during PIMEC 2025 in Karachi to advance maritime cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n
Both sides stressed the strategic importance of their ports, identifying the Port of Constanta as a key Black Sea gateway to Europe and the Port of Karachi as a major hub for South Asia and the Middle East. The discussion focused on concrete steps to improve port operations, trade facilitation and logistics to strengthen regional connectivity and economic growth.<\/p>\n
A central outcome of the talks was progress toward a Memorandum of Understanding between the Port of Constanta and the Port of Karachi, already negotiated by both parties and expected to be signed soon. The MoU will provide a framework for long-term collaboration, enabling the exchange of technical expertise in port management, infrastructure development and digital logistics to enhance trade routes linking Europe, Central Asia and South Asia via the Black Sea and the Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n
Delegates explored modernisation of port logistics, including smarter cargo handling systems and the integration of digital platforms to streamline customs and shipping procedures. Constanta\u2019s experience with multimodal transport connecting sea, rail and road was highlighted as a potential model to improve Karachi\u2019s integration with global supply chains and reduce transit times for Pakistani exporters and importers.<\/p>\n
Capacity building and personnel training were underscored as essential for sustainable maritime growth. Officials discussed establishing training and exchange programmes for KPT technical staff and managers with Romanian counterparts, covering port management, maritime safety, environmental standards and digital cargo tracking to prepare a skilled workforce for next-generation port operations.<\/p>\n
There was also emphasis on mobilising private sector investment and joint ventures to develop port infrastructure and create new commercial corridors. Enhanced cooperation between Constanta and Karachi is expected to open trade opportunities across Europe and Asia, boosting Pakistan\u2019s role in international maritime trade while expanding Romania\u2019s access to Asian markets.<\/p>\n
