On 24 October 2025 the KOICA Pakistan Office held the first community awareness event under the project Establishment of Flood Disaster Prevention Master Plan & Construction of Stormwater Storage System in Multan City for Climate Change Adaptation in Punjab Province. The initiative, running from 2024 to 2027 with USD 10 million in funding, targets practical solutions to recurring monsoon flooding in Multan.<\/p>\n
The campaign is designed to build Flood Preparedness at the local level by engaging residents in flood-prone neighbourhoods and promoting a culture of readiness ahead of future monsoon seasons. Over the next nine months the project will reach 800 residents across 20 vulnerable communities in Multan through education and hands-on activities focused on risk reduction and response.<\/p>\n
KOICA and the Project Management Consultant organised community-based training sessions that used locally produced brochures and short videos to communicate key messages. The materials were developed to strengthen community capacity with practical guidance on early warning, household preparedness and the role of stormwater management systems in reducing flood impact.<\/p>\n
Deputy Country Director Harim Go said KOICA designed the project to deliver durable, effective measures that address the annual flood challenges faced by Multan City, describing the October event as the first concrete step toward wider preparedness and adaptation. The office emphasised continued outreach to expand awareness and support community-led resilience.<\/p>\n
Representatives from local authorities welcomed the initiative. Managing Director of WASA Multan Khalid Raza Khan and Additional Director General of the Multan Development Authority Atta Ul Haq Khokhar expressed appreciation for KOICA’s support and reaffirmed their commitment to close collaboration during implementation to reduce flood damage and improve urban water management.<\/p>\n
Beyond awareness sessions, the broader project work on a flood disaster prevention master plan and the construction of stormwater storage infrastructure aims to integrate technical measures with community-based Flood Preparedness.
