Shaharsaz marked its 29th anniversary in Rawalpindi by announcing the formal handover of rainwater harvesting units installed at 18 government schools, a move framed within the organisation’s commitment to safe, resilient, inclusive and sustainable educational environments. The event’s guest of honour, Tariq Mahmood, CEO of the District Education Authority Rawalpindi, praised the programme’s achievements and underscored the importance of sustainable education, environmental protection and active community engagement to ensure long-term impact. School leaders and education officials attended to witness the transfer and discuss operational plans.<\/p>\n
Participants included Ms Anita Sajjad, DEO Secondary, Ms Tabinda, Ahad Ali Siddiqui, Dr Benish and Mrs Shaheena Babar. PUCCR<\/em> project manager Dr Benish presented details of the progressive programme under the PUCCR framework while Ahad Ali Siddiqui and Mrs Shaheena Babar highlighted the role of environmental education and community partnerships in maintaining the new systems.<\/p>\n Ms Tabinda commended students and teachers for their active participation, noting that hands-on initiatives such as rainwater harvesting and urban agriculture help guarantee a healthier, more sustainable environment for future generations. On-site engineer Mr Abdullah led an interactive question and answer session, sharing practical experiences, implementation challenges and key milestones from the field.<\/p>\n A significant moment at the event was the signing of Memorandums of Cooperation with principals of the 18 beneficiary schools, a step designed to ensure the protection, upkeep and continuity of the newly installed rainwater harvesting units and related sustainable measures. The programme was implemented with support from UN Habitat and the Adaptation Fund.<\/p>\n With students, teachers, local communities and vendors collaborating on-site, the initiative has become a practical model for resilient schools that adopt rainwater harvesting, urban agriculture and energy-saving solutions.
