The recent, heartbreaking death of a student at the University of Lahore is not just another headline or statistic; it is a stark indictment of an academic culture that has traded human compassion for cold, mechanical efficiency. When a young person, standing at the edge of their future, feels so overwhelmed that they can no longer bear the weight of their world, we are forced to confront a painful question: what are we really teaching them?

The Weight of the “Perfect” Student

for many Pakistani students, university is not just about personal interest; it is a high-stakes investment made by their families. This creates a dual pressure the external demand for high grades and the internal fear of becoming a “disappointment.” When this fragile state of mind meets an academic environment that values rigid compliance over human connection, the results can be devastating.

We have built a system where a single percentage point in attendance or a missed deadline is treated as a moral failing. Students are navigating a labyrinth of “relative grading” and “bell curves,” where their success is measured against the failure of their peers. In this hyper-competitive vacuum, the human element the sleepless nights, the anxiety about the future, and the basic need for a kind word is often discarded as a distraction.

The Teacher: Architect or Executioner?

A teacher’s influence extends far beyond the whiteboard. For a student, a professor often stands as the gatekeeper of their future. This power dynamic is immense. A “capable” teacher is frequently defined by research output, but in reality, their greatest strength lies in their humanity.

When faculty members use their authority to belittle, threaten, or overwhelm students under the guise of “rigor,” they are not teaching they are breaking. A teacher who fails to notice the pale face of a student in the back row, or who ignores the signs of a crumbling spirit, is missing the most vital part of their vocation. We need educators who understand that their task is to build minds, not shatter them. True academic excellence cannot exist in an atmosphere of fear.

The Invisible Scars The tragedy of student suicide leaves a permanent scar on the soul of a campus. It creates a hush in the hallways a mix of collective grief and a terrifying realization among other students that their own struggles, too, might be invisible. The trauma ripples through the student body, often breeding a sense of hopelessness that can stifle the creativity and ambition of an entire generation.

Turning the Tide:

From Policing to Parenting to change this reality, we need more than “awareness walks” and banners. The Higher Education Commission (HEC) and university administrations must move toward a model of radical empathy.

Emotional Literacy for Faculty:

Emotional intelligence must become a prerequisite for teaching. Professors should be trained to recognize the symptoms of clinical depression and chronic stress. They should be mentors who guide, not wardens who punish.

The 75% Rule vs. the Human Rule: Rigid attendance policies must be tempered with compassion. If a student is struggling with their mental health, the system should offer a bridge, not a barrier.

De-stigmatizing the “Help” Desk:

Counseling centers should not be hidden in the basement of a medical wing. They should be visible, well-funded, and woven into the fabric of campus life. Seeking help must be seen as an act of courage, not a sign of weakness.

A university degree is meant to be a passport to a better life, not a weight that drags a soul into despair. We must demand an education system that treats our youth as human beings with limits, emotions, and dreams not as roll numbers on a spreadsheet.

As a society, we failed to protect a life that was entrusted to our institutions. Let this be the moment we decide that no grade is worth a life, and no academic standard is more important than the heartbeat of a student.

Marvi Mustafa (Lecturer, PHD Scholar) The Price of a Degree: When the Classroom Turns Into a War Zone Universities were once imagined as safe spaces for growth and enlightenment, yet their corridors are increasingly filled with a quiet, unseen despair.
