The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources has developed and assembled a Hybrid Emergency Filtration Unit at the request of Muslim Hands to deliver safe drinking water in emergency and humanitarian settings. The hybrid filtration system was designed to be rapidly deployable and to function where conventional water supplies are compromised.<\/p>\n
The unit is capable of producing approximately 30 liters of safe drinking water per minute and is configured to run manually as well as on solar power, ensuring operation in off-grid and disaster-affected areas. This dual-mode capability makes the hybrid filtration unit adaptable to a wide range of field conditions where grid power is unavailable or unreliable.<\/p>\n
The system integrates multiple disinfection barriers, including UV disinfection, chlorination and ozonation, providing layered protection against microbiological contamination. These combined technologies enhance resilience during acute emergencies and early recovery phases by reducing the risk of waterborne disease transmission.<\/p>\n
Technical consultations were held between Dr. Basel Alkhder, Global Emergency Lead, and Dr. Mahmoud Shatat, Technical WASH Advisor and Specialist at Muslim Hands UK, with Dr. Hifza Rasheed, Director General (Water Quality) at PCRWR. Conversations focused on design optimisation, operational efficiency and ensuring the hybrid filtration unit meets the practical needs of diverse field environments.<\/p>\n
In recognition of PCRWR\u2019s technical expertise and the prototype\u2019s potential, Muslim Hands has expressed interest in having PCRWR reproduce and scale up the hybrid filtration units for deployment in Africa, Afghanistan and Somalia.
