The Chief Minister’s Adult Cardiac Surgery Program has been formally launched in Punjab with approval from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, offering free treatment facilities valued at more than Rs 3 billion annually to heart patients. The new initiative will provide comprehensive adult cardiac surgery services across public and empaneled private hospitals to reduce surgical backlogs and improve access.<\/p>\n
A meeting at the Punjab Health Initiative Management Company brought together senior health officials and advisers, including Dr Farqad Alamgir<\/strong>, Chairman of the Chief Minister’s Advisory Committee on Cardiology, Azmat Mahmood<\/strong>, Secretary of Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education, and Dr Ali Razaq<\/strong>, CEO of the Punjab Health Initiative Management Company. Provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique<\/strong> praised contributions from Health Economist Dr Muhammad Adnan Khan<\/strong> and the cardiology advisory team for guiding the program.<\/p>\n The program begins its first phase with nine government cardiac institutions and 15 private hospitals across Punjab. The government facilities named for initial participation include Punjab Institute of Cardiology Lahore, Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology Rawalpindi, Quaid-e-Azam Medical College Bahawalpur, Sardar Fateh Muhammad Khan Institute of Cardiology DG Khan, Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology Faisalabad, Sahiwal Institute of Cardiology Sahiwal, Sheikh Zayed Hospital and Medical College Rahim Yar Khan, Multan Institute of Cardiology Multan and Wazirabad Institute of Cardiology Wazirabad. Additional hospitals will be empaneled to expand coverage and convenience for patients.<\/p>\n Government cardiac institutions will serve as the primary registration and treatment centres while referrals to private hospitals will be managed through a Multidisciplinary Team to ensure clinical oversight. The program also includes upgrades to public cardiac facilities to strengthen local capacity and improve patient outcomes.<\/p>\n Under the scheme, annual coverage per patient has been set at Rs 1 million, and a reserve fund will support patients whose prescribed package concludes during treatment or whose complex cases exceed standard limits. All types of adult cardiac surgery procedures are included under the program to address a wide range of clinical needs and reduce waiting lists significantly.<\/p>\n An IT-based dashboard will be developed to monitor the Chief Minister’s Adult Cardiac Surgery Program, track outcomes and ensure transparent management of resources.
