The Algerian Embassy in Islamabad welcomed a steady stream of Pakistani officials, diplomats and civil society representatives who gathered to express condolences following the death of former President Liamine Zeroual on 29 March 2026.<\/p>\n
Former Algerian President Liamine Zeroual, who died at the age of 84 after a long illness, led Algeria from 1994 to 1999 during the difficult years of the Black Decade and introduced the Civil Concord law aimed at national reconciliation. The embassy opened a condolence book to facilitate Pakistani friends and partners who wished to pay their respects.<\/p>\n
On 2 April, Chairman Senate of Pakistan Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani visited the Algerian Embassy and signed the condolence book. Ambassador Dr. Brahim Romani received Mr. Gillani and the accompanying delegation, which included Ms. Misbah Khar representing the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers Conference. In his entry, Mr. Gillani praised the late president as a statesman who guided his country through crisis and advanced the cause of democracy and development.<\/p>\n
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Ambassador Tariq Fatimi and Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Hamid Asghar Khan also met Ambassador Dr. Brahim Romani at the embassy to convey Pakistan’s sympathies over the passing of Liamine Zeroual.<\/p>\n
The mission reported a large turnout from the diplomatic community with ambassadors and high commissioners from Africa, the Arab world and beyond registering their condolences. The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps and envoys from countries including Egypt, Libya, Ethiopia, Tunisia, Somalia, Rwanda, Romania, Sri Lanka, Yemen, Oman, Palestine and Indonesia joined Pakistani leaders in expressing solidarity with the Algerian people.<\/p>\n
The presence of senior Pakistani officials underscored the close diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Algeria and reflected shared recognition of the late president’s efforts toward national reconciliation.
