On 15 April 2026 in Islamabad the Legal Aid and Justice Authority (LAJA) and the Legal Aid Society (LAS) formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding at the Ministry of Law and Justice to expand legal aid and improve access to justice across Pakistan.<\/p>\n
The LAS, a Karachi-based non-profit with offices in Sindh and the Islamabad Capital Territory, will work with LAJA, a statutory body, to target underserved areas including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and ICT where structural and socio-economic barriers limit access to legal services.<\/p>\n
Barrister Aqeel Malik, Minister of State for Law and Justice, attended the signing and highlighted the role of leadership in strengthening legal aid systems, supporting marginalized communities and empowering bar associations. He also underscored the importance of innovation, including legal technology and AI-driven solutions, in reaching remote and vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n
The MoU sets out a framework for cooperation based on information sharing, joint programming and capacity building, with coordinated advocacy to promote the rule of law. Practical measures include expanding pro bono and subsidized legal aid services, deploying community paralegals, and producing multilingual legal awareness resources to serve diverse communities.<\/p>\n
Technology-enabled legal assistance forms a core part of the agreement, with plans for remote services and helplines to increase reach and responsiveness. The partners also committed to institutional strengthening through training for justice sector stakeholders and joint research to develop knowledge products and best practices for national and international forums.<\/p>\n
Both organisations emphasized maintaining high professional standards and effective coordination through designated focal points to ensure sustainable outcomes.
