Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Broadcasting Barrister Danyal Chaudhry warned that escalating tensions between the US and Iran, instability near the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions in global supply lines have triggered an extraordinary rise in crude oil prices with direct consequences for import-dependent economies like Pakistan.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a briefing hosted by the Parliamentary Forum on Energy and Economy at the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services in Islamabad, Barrister Danyal explained that Pakistan\u2019s heavy reliance on imported fuels necessitated adjustments to domestic petroleum product pricing to maintain uninterrupted supplies, safeguard economic stability and preserve national energy security.<\/p>\n
He noted that petroleum product prices in Pakistan rose by over 55 percent amid the global crude surge. The increase in the Petroleum Development Levy (PDL) was implemented according to economic requirements and fiscal discipline under the IMF programme, measures the government says are aimed at stabilising markets and protecting public interest.<\/p>\n
Barrister Danyal rejected claims that the price hikes were solely the result of domestic policy choices, attributing the primary causes to global conflict and supply disruptions. He emphasised that energy security is not merely an economic issue but is closely tied to national security, public trust and state stability, and that the government is pursuing transparent communications to counter misinformation.<\/p>\n
The briefing also underscored the need to reduce dependence on costly imported fossil fuels and accelerate investment in local, affordable and sustainable energy sources to strengthen long-term energy security.
