The event mobilised volunteers from schools, universities, civil society and the local community to remove litter and hazardous material from the lake shore and surrounding areas.

Volunteers systematically collected a significant volume of solid and hazardous waste during the day. Teams reported a worrying find of discarded syringes and hospital waste alongside a heavy load of plastic bottles, bags and other debris, underscoring the immediate threat to Rawal Lake’s ecosystem and public health. The Rawal Lake cleanup highlighted how persistent pollution endangers this vital water reservoir and popular recreational area in the capital.

The campaign combined hands-on cleaning with urgent public awareness about the dangers of improper medical waste disposal and the long-lasting impact of plastic pollution on freshwater habitats. Organisers stressed that the exercise was intended to spark continuous behaviour change rather than be a one-off event, and called on communities to protect natural habitats and local water sources.

Addressing participants, the Director General of Pak-EPA said, “This drive is about more than collecting waste; it is about reshaping our relationship with nature. The presence of hospital waste and plastics in Rawal Lake is a stark warning. I strongly encourage our youth and all citizens to ensure that such activities are done continuously. We must move beyond one-day events to build lasting habits that protect our climate, inspired by nature itself.” The DG urged schools and youth groups to sustain regular clean-up and awareness efforts.

The Pak-EPA spokesperson emphasised the interconnected need for clean air, water and soil, noting that natural systems have been degraded by vehicular emissions, stack emissions, brick kilns, open burning, untreated industrial effluents and direct disposal of domestic wastewater, as well as expanding dumping sites and growing solid waste. He called for stronger enforcement, better waste management and public education to restore nature to its original condition for future generations.

Pak-EPA confirmed its commitment to ongoing public engagement, cross-sector collaboration and decisive enforcement to tackle pollution at Rawal Lake and beyond. The agency said partnerships with Nestlé Pakistan and the Small Dams Department will continue to support community-led actions and policies that translate the spirit of World Environment Day into sustained climate and environmental protection.

Rawal Lake cleanup led by Pak-EPA and Nestlé Pakistan removed hazardous waste and raised awareness ahead of World Environment Day 2026.

[94

post-19322","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pakistan
["GET
