The one-day conference organized by OIC-COMSTECH and the Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology sought practical steps to boost climate communication, environmental reporting and public engagement across Pakistan.

Attaullah Tarar, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, attended as chief guest and praised the initiative, saying green journalism is an effective tool for raising environmental awareness and shaping public behaviour. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for efforts that strengthen reporting on climate risks and sustainability issues, noting Pakistan’s particular vulnerability despite contributing a relatively small share of global emissions.

Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General of OIC-COMSTECH, highlighted climate change, biodiversity loss, desertification, water scarcity and food insecurity as urgent threats facing many OIC member states. He urged closer collaboration among media, scientists and policymakers so journalists can translate complex climate science into clear, evidence-based information that resonates with the public.

Prof. Dr. Zabta Khan Shinwari, Vice Chancellor of FUUAST, underscored the role of universities in embedding green journalism in curricula and preparing the next generation of reporters and communicators. A dedicated session with media faculty and researchers discussed integrating green journalism into university programmes, professional training frameworks and classroom syllabuses to ensure reporters have the skills to cover climate science and environmental policy accurately.

The conference panels examined practical facets of climate reporting. The session on media and environmental realities featured noted journalists Rauf Klasra, Mahnoor Qureshi, Javed Chaudhry and Azaz Syed, while Dr. Margaret Otieno of Kenya delivered an international keynote message. Speakers called for fact-based coverage, sustained public awareness campaigns and stronger newsroom engagement with environmental beats.

A second panel explored the societal responsibilities of media, presenting research on climate communication, environmental policy and public awareness. Participants also showcased a student poster exhibition and screened documentaries that highlighted local environmental challenges and community-led responses, demonstrating how green journalism can amplify solutions as well as risks.

Speakers concluded that green journalism must move from niche reporting into mainstream practice if Pakistan is to build resilient communities and inform policy effectively. They urged media houses, academic institutions, government ministries and civil society to work together to promote evidence-based reporting, improve public understanding and support informed climate action across the country.

Green Journalism must be mainstreamed in Pakistan, experts urge to strengthen climate communication, public awareness and evidence-based environmental reporting.

[94

post-19464","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-pakistan
["GET
