Islamabad, September 5, 2026: The Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PM&DC) has decided to introduce a mandatory fire safety education and training programme for house officers in all medical and dental colleges to improve emergency preparedness across healthcare institutions.<\/p>\n
The council said the initiative is aimed at strengthening fire safety awareness and ensuring the safety and well-being of doctors, patients, students and staff in medical and dental institutions.<\/p>\n
PM&DC President Prof Dr Rizwan Taj said in a statement that the fire safety training programme would be made part of the house job of house officers. Dedicated training hours will be set aside for fire safety awareness, emergency fire drills, patient safety and proper evacuation procedures in case of a fire emergency.<\/p>\n
According to PM&DC, the decision will follow a comprehensive review of existing fire safety protocols and identification of areas requiring improvement. The council said there was a need to reinforce fire safety education and awareness in institutions falling under its regulatory umbrella.<\/p>\n
PM&DC said it was committed to addressing gaps without delay and improving fire-emergency preparedness among students, healthcare professionals, patients and staff.<\/p>\n
All medical colleges and teaching hospitals will be required to ensure robust fire safety arrangements and effective emergency preparedness for the protection of students, house officers, patients, healthcare professionals and other staff.<\/p>\n
Prof Dr Rizwan Taj noted that hospitals provide care to some of the most vulnerable people, who rely on healthcare staff to respond swiftly and effectively during a fire emergency. He stressed that medical institutions must improve their existing fire prevention and emergency response measures.<\/p>\n
The PM&DC president also expressed interest in expanding the training programme in future to medical students, postgraduates and eventually all healthcare professionals, saying fire safety is regarded globally as an essential skill for healthcare workers.<\/p>\n
He said PM&DC intended to promote the safest and highest quality learning environments and looked forward to developing new protocols focused on emergency preparedness instead of relying only on emergency response teams.<\/p>\n
The council has also outlined measures to be included in the fire safety programme for medical house officers. These include regular fire safety drills and evacuation exercises in medical colleges and teaching hospitals to promote a culture of preparedness and prompt, effective response.<\/p>\n
