ISLAMABAD, Sept 11: Jamaat-e-Islami Islamabad Emir Nasrullah Randhawa has said the party will continue its campaign against the petroleum levy until the public is provided genuine relief.<\/p>\n
Addressing a press conference at the Jamaat-e-Islami Islamabad office, Randhawa said the government had added to the burden of the people through the petroleum levy instead of providing relief during the Iran-US war. He said Rs150 billion more than the levy fixed in the budget had been collected, while nearly Rs500 billion had been gathered through the levy in previous years, yet no oil refinery had been upgraded as required.<\/p>\n
He said the stated purpose of the petroleum levy was to upgrade refineries, but the amount had become a source of additional pressure on the public. He added that the government and bureaucracy had failed to answer the questions raised by Jamaat-e-Islami during negotiations.<\/p>\n
Randhawa said repeated increases in the prices of petroleum products had made life difficult for ordinary citizens. He urged the government to stop burdening the people and reduce its lavish expenditures.<\/p>\n
He announced that a major women\u2019s protest would be held today at Aabpara Chowk, adding that thousands of women would raise their voice for their rights. He said the government would ultimately have to bow before facts and public pressure.<\/p>\n
The JI Islamabad chief said participants of any long march coming to Islamabad for public rights would be treated as guests, and Jamaat-e-Islami would welcome and host them to the best of its ability. He said if Hafiz Naeemur Rehman announced coming to Islamabad, he would also be warmly received.<\/p>\n
Randhawa said cheaper petrol would bring relief to the people, help the economy move forward and provide real benefit to the common man.<\/p>\n
