KARACHI: Google DeepMind and Google Research have launched WeatherNext 3, a new artificial intelligence-based global weather forecasting model designed to provide localised, real-time climate information at a much sharper resolution.<\/p>\n
According to Google, the system uses live geostationary satellite mosaics along with data from ground weather stations, reducing dependence on slower and computing-intensive numerical forecasting methods.<\/p>\n
WeatherNext 3 can issue fresh forecasts every hour and provide weather information at up to 5-kilometre spatial resolution, which Google said is about five times sharper than its previous model.<\/p>\n
The company said the system can resolve surface temperature and moisture at 5 km, or 0.05 degrees, while surface winds can be forecast at 10 km, or 0.1 degrees. This is expected to improve local-level weather information, including in areas where forecasting facilities have traditionally been limited.<\/p>\n
Google said the new model offers major improvement in precipitation forecasting, cutting error metrics by up to 50 per cent on key precipitation benchmarks when compared with traditional numerical weather prediction baselines.<\/p>\n
The company added that hourly updates would provide important lead time as storms, fronts and extreme weather conditions develop quickly.<\/p>\n
WeatherNext 3 also includes features aimed at the clean energy sector. It provides specialised outputs such as wind speeds at 100-metre turbine height, multi-layer cloud cover and solar irradiance, which can help grid operators and clean-energy producers.<\/p>\n
Google said the system could support wind power producers and improve solar energy planning through better forecasts related to cloud cover and sunlight.<\/p>\n
WeatherNext 3 has been rolled out from today across Google services, including Google Search, the Gemini app, Google Maps, Google Maps Platform Weather API and Google Earth Engine.<\/p>\n
The company said the update significantly improves longer-term forecasts. For planning a day or more in advance, users will see up to 50 per cent more accurate precipitation forecasts, with the biggest gains in regions where forecasts have historically been less reliable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
