ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb on Friday chaired a meeting at the Finance Division to review progress on the retailers\u2019 tax scheme and discuss steps for facilitating registration and broadening the tax base.<\/p>\n
The meeting was attended by the Minister of State for Finance, the Chairman Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and senior FBR officials.<\/p>\n
The finance minister said the government was working to simplify tax procedures and help retailers meet their tax obligations. He noted that the scheme offered retailers a simplified path to join the formal tax system and contribute to the country\u2019s economic development.<\/p>\n
Participants reviewed progress on registrations and tax returns under the scheme, including the participation of existing taxpayers and requirements related to tax payments.<\/p>\n
Senator Aurangzeb stressed the need to assess the experience gained during implementation and resolve operational issues so the scheme could achieve its objectives.<\/p>\n
The meeting also discussed efforts to identify and map unregistered retailers through available data and relevant identification records. The FBR briefed the meeting on data validation and the importance of ensuring that registration records accurately reflected the businesses concerned.<\/p>\n
The finance minister called for a balanced approach based on taxpayer facilitation in a targeted and well-documented manner.<\/p>\n
He also underlined that the Retailers\u2019 Tax Scheme should not be treated as a one-year arrangement limited to 2026. He said it was designed to provide a simplified route for small retailers to enter and remain within the formal tax system in the coming years.<\/p>\n
The meeting further reviewed filing procedures, deadlines and related operational matters.<\/p>\n
It reaffirmed the importance of making tax compliance simpler and more accessible for small retailers while gradually documenting economic activity and expanding the tax base.<\/p>\n
