The song reflects on the uncertainty of a relationship marked by hurt, attachment and the urge to hold on. While the lyrics carry emotional tension, Kasumbi’s production keeps the track upbeat and in motion, creating a contrast between the song’s subject and its musical energy.

The contrast is also present in the vocal performances. Afusic contributes his familiar rhythmic phrasing, while Shae Gill explores a range and style that audiences have heard less frequently from her. Gul Khan’s sarangi remains woven through the production, adding depth to the electronic soundscape.

Kasumbi’s direction places movement at the centre of the video, using choreography to explore the relationship at the heart of Qasam. Instead of presenting the story in a literal way, the movement follows different stages of connection, with two people moving closer, drifting apart, trying to trust each other and finding their way back.

At one point, invisible strings appear to connect and control the dancers. In other sequences, their bodies move almost like stitches, repeatedly coming together and separating. These ideas mirror the song’s theme of a relationship attempting to repair itself even as it risks falling apart, with Movement Director Shams Mansur shaping that visual language.

The music video was filmed inside Karachi’s century-old Bristol Hotel. Production designer Hammad Sohail uses the building’s existing character as part of the visual setting. Its ageing interiors, chandeliers and weathered surfaces are combined with details such as fading flowers and an untouched banquet, giving the space a lived-in feel.

Another recurring visual idea in the video is the moth and the flame. The concept came from Abdullah Kasumbi and Shams Mansur’s encounters with Rumi and Sufi thought during a visit to Konya, drawing on the familiar shama and parwana metaphor of a moth being irresistibly drawn towards a flame. In Qasam, the image becomes another way to view a relationship where attraction and emotional risk exist together. By the final moments of the video, as Shae reaches for Afusic’s hand, the moth also finds its way to the flame.

Speaking about the release, Kamal Khan, Executive Producer of Coke Studio Nu.WAV, said: “Qasam was really Abdullah’s world from the beginning. He was producing the song and directing the video, so those two things naturally grew together. Afusic wrote from a very real place. Shae sounds quite different on this one, which I really liked, and then Shams came in and found a way of showing the relationship through movement without making everything too literal. The Bristol already had so much character that they didn’t need to force anything. The sarangi, the dancers, the moth and flame idea – somehow it all sits together and feels like one world. That’s what I really like about it.”

Qasam brings together two artists with distinct journeys in contemporary South Asian music. Shae Gill made her Coke Studio debut with Ali Sethi in Season 14 on Pasoori, which became the first locally produced Pakistani music video to cross one billion views on YouTube. She has since worked on collaborations including Sukoon with Hassan & Roshaan, Le Right alongside Ali Sethi, Maanu and Abdullah Siddiqui, Bulleya with Asim Azhar, and Coke Studio Global’s One Love with Turkish artist Evdeki Saat.

Afusic has developed from a digital-first singer, songwriter and rapper into one of the notable emerging voices in contemporary South Asian pop and hip-hop. His breakout track Pal Pal reached listeners beyond Pakistan, topped the UK Official Asian Music Chart and entered the Canadian Hot 100. Qasam is also his second appearance on Coke Studio Nu.WAV after Dil, the platform’s opening release.

Abdullah Kasumbi, who has worked on both the music and the video, brings the sonic and visual elements of Qasam together as part of one creative idea. As co-founder of creative studio FT.WA, Kasumbi has worked across music production, visual direction and live performance.

Executive produced by Kamal Khan, Qasam is produced, arranged and mixed by Abdullah Kasumbi. Gul Khan performs the sarangi, while Sean Tallman has handled mastering.

The music video is directed by Kasumbi, with Babar Dahr as cinematographer, Hammad Sohail on production design, Faraz Sheikh and Team on styling, Naweera Azeiz on Shae Gill’s look, and Shams Mansur and Shaan-e-Qasim Mansur on movement. Gali Films leads production, with Iman Khan, Jamal Haroon, Zarmeen Ali, Taimur Aamir and Fariha Afzal forming the core production team.

Qasam is the fifth of six Coke Studio Nu.WAV releases, following Dil, Rangeen, Maheya and Shabnam. The final release and its creative world are set to follow next.

Qasam can be watched on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCQ1MfeI2d0 and listened to on Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/album/4q5WpIQxf8CdHmihsCJGmM.
