The business leaders of the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) and Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (PATA) have strongly voiced their opposition to recent taxation policies, urging the government to uphold promises of tax exemptions and reduce logistical costs to facilitate economic growth in these conflict-affected regions. The Presidents of various Chambers of Commerce and Industry from FATA\/PATA, along with representatives from the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI), emphasized the critical need for a zero-tax policy and urged authorities to reconsider the recent imposition of a 10% sales tax and heightened freight charges.<\/p>\n
During a high-level meeting held in Islamabad, business community leaders articulated their concerns to FPCCI President Atif Ikram Sheikh and Minister of State for Tribal Areas Mubarak Zeb. They demanded the immediate withdrawal of the 10% sales tax on FATA\/PATA regions, insisting that the punitive tax will hinder the establishment of industries and exacerbate unemployment. The community reiterated their expectation for the government to honor its original commitment of a ten-year tax exemption following the merger of these districts into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in 2018. They pointed out that, after five years, only a one-year extension has been granted, which some see as a significant barrier to attracting investment and fostering sustainable growth.<\/p>\n
Minister of State Mubarak Zeb, representing the government, assured that he would urgently present the issues of freight reduction and tax relief to the Prime Minister, Mian Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. Zeb suggested that including representatives from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s National Assembly members on a committee led by Rana Sanaullah could streamline efforts to implement the promised policies and ensure stability in the region’s economic policies.<\/p>\n
The FPCCI President, Atif Ikram Sheikh, emphasized that the logistics and infrastructure challenges faced by FATA\/PATA\u2014such as higher transportation costs due to their remote location and lack of access to sea ports\u2014necessitate special tax concessions. He warned that the current taxation approach, coupled with high freight charges, would not only stifle industry development but also enhance unemployment and risk law and order issues. Sheikh called for a collaborative approach among stakeholders to maintain a zero-tax policy as a vital relief measure.<\/p>\n
Representatives of the local chambers elaborated on the region\u2019s hardships, citing the repeated damages caused by terrorism, floods, and earthquakes. They highlighted that their geographic disadvantage, notably their inland location resulting in transportation costs of twenty-five rupees per kilogram, severely hampers competitiveness against industrial centers in cities like Lahore and Karachi. They urged the government to follow international norms that provide tax relief to remote areas far from seaports, advocating for the continuation of tax exemptions as a means of economic stabilization and development.<\/p>\n
