Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Reaffirms Commitment to Eradicate Polio from Pakistan<\/p>\n
Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting of the National Task Force on Polio Eradication, attended by senior government officials and prominent international partners. During the meeting, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s resolute commitment to making Pakistan completely polio-free, commending the vital role played by frontline polio workers and international partners such as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, UNICEF, World Health Organization, KS Relief Saudi Arabia, and Rotary International.<\/p>\n
Addressing the session, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed officials to accelerate comprehensive efforts aimed at eliminating polio. “Despite challenges and difficulties, Pakistan is determined to achieve its goal of becoming polio-free through close cooperation and joint action at the international, national, and community levels,” he stated.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister emphasized, “It is our collective responsibility to ensure every child across the country receives multiple doses of the polio vaccine. Our aim is not only to eradicate polio but also to protect all our children from this crippling disease.” He expressed appreciation for the unwavering dedication and courage of frontline polio vaccination teams, whose safety and protection, he reiterated, remain the government’s foremost priority.<\/p>\n
Highlighting significant recent advancements in combating polio, the Prime Minister praised the consistent and supportive role of provincial governments, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir administrations, as well as law-enforcement agencies across Pakistan. “Their sustained cooperation in challenging environments is commendable and crucial for our national polio eradication efforts,” he said.<\/p>\n
Expressing gratitude to international stakeholders, Prime Minister Sharif particularly acknowledged Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for providing steadfast support and cooperation in Pakistan\u2019s fight against polio. “I am thankful to all our global partners for their valuable assistance, especially the continued support from Saudi Arabia’s leadership and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation,” he remarked.<\/p>\n
During the meeting, Dr. Christopher Elias, Chair of the Polio Oversight Board and President of Global Development at the Gates Foundation, attended along with high-level representatives including WHO Regional Director Dr. Hanan Balkhy, UNICEF Regional Director Sanjay Wijesekera, Dr. Ziad Memish of KS Relief Saudi Arabia, Rotary International representative Michael McGovern, and Rotary trustee Aziz Memon. They shared insights and recommendations to enhance ongoing polio eradication strategies.<\/p>\n
Participants received detailed briefings on current polio eradication measures being implemented nationwide. Officials informed that targeted anti-polio campaigns addressing specific district-level challenges, particularly focusing on the southern districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, were underway. These plans aim to not only end polio cases among children but also completely remove traces of the virus from environmental samples.<\/p>\n
