The World Health Organization (WHO) has supported Pakistan’s proactive measures against monsoon health emergencies by dispatching over 300,000 essential medical items nationwide. These supplies will ensure rapid responses in the event of natural disasters and health emergencies caused by heavy rains and flooding, aimed at protecting vulnerable communities across the country.<\/p>\n
As part of Pakistan’s Monsoon Contingency Plan, WHO deployed five trucks filled with more than 2,400 boxes of crucial medicines and medical supplies, prepositioned carefully across the country’s four provinces\u2014Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and Punjab\u2014and Pakistan-administered Kashmir (PAK). The strategic distribution aligns with the provinces’ contingency plans designed specifically for July to October, a period known for increased monsoon activity.<\/p>\n
Prepared under the leadership of Pakistan’s Ministry of Health, and supported by WHO and its partners, the Monsoon Contingency Plan aims to strengthen preparedness and enable emergency health services for approximately 1.3 million affected people across 33 priority districts. This proactive approach will facilitate timely, life-saving assistance should severe flooding or related disease outbreaks occur.<\/p>\n
Highlighting the importance of collaboration, WHO Representative in Pakistan Dr. Dapeng Luo stated, “WHO emergency teams are working in close collaboration with Pakistan\u2019s health departments across the country to preposition medicines and medical items that would allow a rapid response to save lives. We are proud to partner with Pakistan to deliver health for all and build resilience to better adapt and respond to the increasing frequency and severity of climate-related hazards, protecting the most vulnerable.”<\/p>\n
Pakistan remains highly vulnerable to adverse climate events, ranked as the eighth-most affected country by extreme weather events between 2000 and 2019 according to the Global Climate Risk Index 2021.
