Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif visited the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) to assess Pakistan\u2019s preparedness and response to the intensifying monsoon season, which has shown unusual strength and duration this year. During his visit, the Prime Minister received detailed briefings on the damages sustained so far, projections for the remainder of the season, and the current status of the country\u2019s rivers and hydraulic infrastructure.<\/p>\n
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman, Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, informed the Prime Minister that while the current monsoon has brought heightened risks, phased occurrence of hill torrents helped prevent large-scale losses. Malik also highlighted the NDMA\u2019s ongoing media campaign to raise public awareness and disseminate advisories, which has played a vital role in minimizing casualties and property damage.<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister was presented with strategic initiatives to bolster national emergency response capabilities. These include the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at NEOC and the development of a joint Pakistan-China facility under the Belt and Road Initiative Integrated Monitoring and Coordination Centre (BRI-IMCC) framework.<\/p>\n
In response, Prime Minister Sharif commended the coordinated efforts of the NDMA and provincial governments. He expressed his condolences for those who lost their lives during recent disasters and reiterated the federal government\u2019s unwavering support for affected communities. He gave formal approval for the NEOC Centre of Excellence and encouraged further collaboration with Chinese counterparts on the BRI-IMCC project.<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister also directed the NDMA to prioritize human resource development, conduct a comprehensive National Infrastructure Audit to ensure resilient infrastructure, and dispatch a technical team to investigate a recent incident involving tourists in the Swat River.
