This milestone comes as part of a broader regional achievement, with <strong data-start=\"424\" data-end=\"489\">South Asia recording its highest childhood immunisation rates<\/strong> to date.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"500\" data-end=\"749\">The <strong data-start=\"504\" data-end=\"528\">DTP vaccine coverage<\/strong> is considered a key global indicator of immunisation progress. In South Asia, 92% of infants received their third DTP dose in 2024, up by 2 percentage points from the previous year, while first-dose coverage rose to 95%.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"751\" data-end=\"1081\">The report also highlights a <strong data-start=\"780\" data-end=\"827\">dramatic 27% decrease in zero-dose children<\/strong>\u2014those who have received no vaccines\u2014falling from 2.5 million to 1.8 million within a year. This bounce-back surpasses <strong data-start=\"946\" data-end=\"966\">pre-COVID levels<\/strong>, indicating strong recovery efforts led by frontline health workers, national governments, and donor partnerships.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1083\" data-end=\"1363\">\n<p data-start=\"1085\" data-end=\"1363\">\u201cThis is a proud moment for South Asia,\u201d said UNICEF Regional Director for South Asia <strong data-start=\"1171\" data-end=\"1192\">Sanjay Wijesekera<\/strong>. \u201cBut we cannot forget the millions of children who are under-vaccinated or unvaccinated&#8230; We must push into rural areas and give every child their right to healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3 data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1407\">HPV Vaccine Launch Anticipated in 2025<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1409\" data-end=\"1605\">The data also revealed that <strong data-start=\"1437\" data-end=\"1521\">Pakistan is expected to introduce the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in 2025<\/strong>, a key step in preventing cervical cancer and enhancing adolescent health services.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"1607\" data-end=\"1610\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1675\">Pakistan May Become Last Polio-Endemic Country, Senate Told<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1677\" data-end=\"1915\">Despite the encouraging immunisation progress, <strong data-start=\"1724\" data-end=\"1763\">Pakistan still struggles with polio<\/strong>, and Health Minister <strong data-start=\"1785\" data-end=\"1802\">Mustafa Kamal<\/strong> warned the <strong data-start=\"1814\" data-end=\"1824\">Senate<\/strong> that Pakistan may soon become the <strong data-start=\"1859\" data-end=\"1888\">only country in the world<\/strong> where poliovirus persists.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1917\" data-end=\"2116\">He noted that <strong data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"2015\">Afghanistan\u2019s vaccination campaign is progressing without significant resistance<\/strong>, including door-to-door drives and mosque-based outreach\u2014even in conflict-prone areas like Kandahar.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2309\">In contrast, Pakistan faces challenges of vaccine hesitancy and refusal in some areas. Of the <strong data-start=\"2212\" data-end=\"2247\">14 polio cases reported in 2024<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2271\">five were in Bannu<\/strong>, where families refused vaccinations.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"2311\" data-end=\"2478\">\n<p data-start=\"2313\" data-end=\"2478\">\u201cWe\u2019ve moved away from using police to enforce vaccination,\u201d Kamal said, \u201cand are now engaging local influencers to build community trust and save children\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"2480\" data-end=\"2647\">Senator <strong data-start=\"2488\" data-end=\"2510\">Abdul Shakoor Khan<\/strong>, who raised the issue in the Senate, urged that <strong data-start=\"2559\" data-end=\"2594\">religious scholars be mobilized<\/strong> to help dispel myths and improve vaccine acceptance.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2649\" data-end=\"2668\">What Lies Ahead<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2670\" data-end=\"2970\">While Pakistan\u2019s immunisation infrastructure is showing resilience and progress, the <strong data-start=\"2755\" data-end=\"2791\">continued presence of poliovirus<\/strong> remains a major global concern.
