In a significant step towards enhancing patient safety and care quality, the Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC) organised an orientation session to promote the adoption of standardised Hospital Emergency Code Systems across public sector hospitals in the province. The initiative aims to ensure that healthcare leaders and staff are well-versed in emergency protocols, particularly Codes Blue, Red, and Pink, in alignment with national and international best practices.<\/p>\n
The session brought together a wide spectrum of healthcare experts and executives, including vice-chancellors, principals, medical superintendents, and consultants from teaching, tertiary care, specialised referral, and district headquarters hospitals. The forum was presided over by PHC Chief Executive Officer Dr Muhammad Saqib Aziz, with key figures such as Prof Dr Khalid Masood Gondal, Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Medical University and Convener of the Technical Advisory Committee, in attendance both in person and online.<\/p>\n
In his opening remarks, Dr Saqib Aziz underscored the urgency of standardising emergency code protocols across hospitals, noting that the lack of such systems has led to repeated incidents and compromised patient safety. The session provided a detailed overview of the PHC\u2019s recently developed ‘Guidelines on Hospital Emergency Codes.’ Dr Mushtaq Ahmed, Director Clinical Governance and Organisational Standards, outlined the Commission\u2019s ongoing efforts to establish minimum service delivery standards in hospitals, supported by these standardised guidelines. The guidelines introduce ten standardised codes covering a range of emergency scenarios: medical emergencies (such as Blue and Yellow), facility management (including Red, Brown, Orange, and Grey), and security (Pink, Black, White, and Silver). The document highlights essential components for implementation, including comprehensive staff training, installation of public address systems and control centres, and the establishment of response review committees.<\/p>\n
Guest speaker Dr Taarif Hussain Warraich, an emergency medicine physician, shared insights on international best practices related to Code Blue, which deals with medical emergencies requiring immediate response. Dr Warraich pointed out existing gaps in training and equipment but encouraged the development of indigenous protocols tailored to local needs and resources. He also shared national and international data illustrating the effectiveness of timely Code Blue responses in saving lives.<\/p>\n
Participants praised the PHC for organising the awareness session and acknowledged the critical role of medical universities in developing and offering accredited training modules on emergency codes, especially Code Blue. Prof Khalid Masood Gondal noted that the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) has already incorporated medical emergencies management into its training programmes, certifying thousands of healthcare professionals annually. The experts collectively recommended that every hospital conduct needs assessments, customise emergency plans, and use locally developed training materials, highlighting that international resources may not always align with local conditions.<\/p>\n
Concluding the session, Dr Saqib Aziz endorsed these recommendations, urging hospital leaders to initiate tailored emergency plans and invest in resource-appropriate training materials.
