The course, organized by the National Mobility & Independence Training Centre (NM&ITC) at the National Institute of Special Education (NISE), brought together 14 participants from various regions of Pakistan, offering them practical skills and support to promote greater independence in their daily lives.

The training was designed specifically for women, with attendees hailing from cities such as Layyah, Peshawar, Sargodha, Swabi, Malakand, Haripur, and Mirpur (AJK). Among the participants was Ms. Shumaila Kiran, a member of the National Women’s Blind Cricket Team, highlighting the diverse backgrounds and ambitions of those taking part. All participants were provided hostel accommodation throughout the program.

Over the course of the week, participants were introduced to a range of foundational and advanced mobility concepts. The curriculum included sessions on the importance of orientation and mobility, sensory development, and the use of mobility aids. Practical exercises covered self-protection, sighted guide methods, navigation through narrow spaces, seating, and walking in single and double lines. Particular attention was paid to mastering the use of the white cane, with hands-on practice in grip, two-touch, three-touch, slide, diagonal, and pencil techniques. Stair navigation, an advanced but essential skill, was also a key part of the training.

In addition to technical instruction, the training fostered a supportive and inclusive social environment. The hostel stay featured accessible indoor games such as Luddo, chess, Nine Men’s Morris, and playing cards adapted for visually impaired players, alongside Braille story reading sessions. These activities encouraged peer bonding and provided opportunities for recreational engagement in a barrier-free setting.

The program concluded with a formal ceremony attended by officials from the Directorate General of Special Education and the Project Coordination Unit, Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training. Participants shared their personal experiences, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to enhance their independence and confidence. As the first training of its kind tailored specifically for women, this initiative marks an important step towards greater inclusion and self-reliance for visually impaired women in Pakistan.

A groundbreaking one-week training program has been held in Islamabad to empower women with visual impairments through the development of key orientation, mobility, and white cane techniques.
