Pernille Ironside has officially assumed her role as UNICEF’s new Representative in Pakistan, expressing a strong commitment to advancing the rights and well-being of children across the country. At a formal meeting with Nabeel Munir, Special Secretary (UN) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ironside presented her credentials and outlined her vision for UNICEF’s work in the country.<\/p>\n
Ironside emphasized UNICEF\u2019s dedication to protecting and nurturing every child in Pakistan, promising to lead a comprehensive strategy focused on improving children\u2019s lives from birth through adolescence. She highlighted the importance of building on UNICEF\u2019s established partnerships with the Pakistani government, the United Nations, development organizations, civil society, and advocates for child rights, stating that collaboration is vital for creating lasting, positive change.<\/p>\n
Under Ironside\u2019s leadership, UNICEF will continue to support Pakistan through a range of developmental and humanitarian initiatives. Priority areas include expanding access to quality education, strengthening maternal and newborn healthcare, combating child malnutrition, ensuring clean water and proper sanitation, enhancing child protection services, promoting gender equality, and increasing resilience to climate and environmental risks.<\/p>\n
Ironside, a Canadian national, brings over two decades of experience in international development and humanitarian work with UNICEF. She has held leadership roles in multiple countries, including postings in Nigeria, Iraq, Gaza, Yemen, the Philippines, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Most recently, she served as Deputy Director of Data, Planning, Analytics and Monitoring at UNICEF Headquarters in New York.<\/p>\n
She pointed out that Pakistan\u2019s youthful population\u2014almost half of whom are under 18 and two-thirds under 30\u2014holds immense potential for driving national progress. Ironside stressed that by investing in education, health, nutrition, safe water, child protection, and climate resilience, Pakistan can unlock the talent and creativity of its young people and promote prosperity for all.<\/p>\n
