The Pakistan Housing Authority Foundation (PHAF), under the Ministry of Housing and Works, has launched a large-scale tree plantation campaign at its housing project on Kurri Road in Islamabad, aiming to combat the adverse effects of climate change and promote environmental sustainability. The initiative, titled \u201cAik Beti Aik Shajar\u201d and organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCCEC), received 600 saplings for planting as part of the drive.<\/p>\n
Federal Minister for Housing and Works, Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada, chaired the ceremony, with the plantation drive formally inaugurated by Minister of State for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Shezra Ali Khan Kharal, who planted a sapling to mark the occasion. The campaign was launched on the special directions of Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif.<\/p>\n
During the event, Minister Pirzada highlighted the crucial necessity of tree plantation in a country increasingly affected by climate change. He pointed to recent flash floods and other natural disasters as direct consequences of deforestation, emphasizing that caring for and protecting the trees is just as important as planting them. Minister Pirzada praised PHAF\u2019s CEO and team for their efforts in launching the campaign and urged not only the Pakistan Housing Authority but all departments to make tree plantation drives a regular activity in every housing society to ensure environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n
Addressing the audience, Dr. Shezra Mansab Ali Khan Kharal stressed the importance of timely tree plantation, noting that trees are essential in controlling environmental damage during disasters, maintaining water levels, and stabilizing soil. She recounted her visits to recent flood-affected regions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing the destruction as devastating.<\/p>\n
Dr. Kharal explained that the plantation drive is named to reflect the vulnerability of daughters and women, as they are most impacted by the effects of climate change. She described tree plantation as the most effective measure to combat these impacts and reaffirmed Pakistan\u2019s call for climate justice, highlighting that the country contributes little to global emissions yet suffers greatly from climate-related disasters.
