Advancing AI in Health across Pakistan

Federal Health Minister Mustafa Kamal chaired a detailed Zoom meeting with UK-based health technology experts Dr. Sohail Chughtai and Naila Israr to discuss practical applications of AI in Health across Pakistan. The briefing outlined how artificial intelligence can be integrated into clinical workflows and health administration to strengthen service delivery.

Senior officials including the Special Secretary, Additional Secretary, Director General Health, the CEO of the Health Facility Program and the Executive Director of PIMS joined the session to review proposals and technical options. Presenters highlighted priorities such as digitalizing patient records, improving diagnostic accuracy, streamlining treatment pathways and enhancing administrative efficiency through AI tools.

The federal minister stressed the need to adopt modern technology to expand access and build trust in public services, saying, “We must adopt modern technology to make the health system efficient, transparent and more accessible for public welfare. AI is the path to the future, and it can open new avenues in medical care.” This emphasis on AI in Health reflects a push to modernize Pakistan’s health infrastructure while keeping patient access central to planning.

Attendees discussed coordinating efforts with global and national partners named in ongoing initiatives, and examined pilot models that could be scaled within public hospitals and programs. The meeting underlined that careful integration, governance and collaboration will be essential to realize the benefits of AI in Health for clinicians and patients alike.
