Upscaling Green Pakistan Drives Forest Restoration

Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr. Musadik Malik delivered a video message at a COP30 side event on 20 November 2025, highlighting the Upscaling Green Pakistan Programme and Pakistan’s achievements in large-scale forest restoration, ecosystem revival and community-driven conservation.

Dr. Malik reminded delegates that global climate conversations focus on greenhouse gas emissions and the need to expand natural systems that sequester carbon at scale. He underlined the role of nature-based solutions and noted, “Carbon sequestration requires factories that absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. That factory is a tree. We are here to celebrate climate action, the reduction of carbon burdens, and the forests that make it possible.” His remarks linked emissions reduction with the practical benefits of restoring forests under Green Pakistan.

The minister stressed that forests deliver both mitigation and adaptation benefits, helping vulnerable communities withstand growing climate impacts. Through the Upscaling Green Pakistan Programme, vast tracts of degraded land have been restored by planting billions of trees, transforming previously barren areas into thriving ecosystems and building local resilience. The programme has also fostered greater climate awareness and active community involvement in protecting local forests.

A short documentary produced by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination was screened at the session to illustrate field success stories, community participation and ecological transformation achieved under Green Pakistan. The event also featured a panel discussion and drew climate experts, representatives of international organisations, development partners and members of global civil society engaged in forest restoration and resilience building.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Dr. Malik said, “We stand with our forests and with all the forests of the world because we stand with the climate, and we are determined to protect it.” The minister framed Green Pakistan as a scalable model of nature-based solutions that strengthens local livelihoods while contributing to Pakistan’s climate goals.
