Advancing Livestock Genomics in Pakistan

The Institute of Animal Sciences and the National Center for Livestock Breeding, Genetics & Genomics at Pir Mehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi successfully wrapped up the Two-Day Livestock Genetics & Genomics Conference (LGGC-2025) held November 19-20 under the theme ‘From Genes to Sustainability’. The event drew leading scientists, geneticists, breeders, industry representatives, policymakers and students to discuss how Livestock Genomics can reshape production systems across Pakistan.

Prof. Dr. Qamar-uz-Zaman, Vice Chancellor of PMAS-AAUR, said the conference reflects the university’s commitment to modernizing the livestock sector through evidence-based innovation. He emphasized that by harnessing genetic and genomic advancements, Pakistan can enhance animal productivity, lower production costs and promote climate-smart farming systems that strengthen food security.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Younus of the University of Veterinary & Animal Sciences Lahore highlighted genomic selection, precision breeding and data-driven herd management as practical tools to produce healthier animals with improved feed efficiency and greater disease resistance. He called for stronger collaboration among universities, government agencies, breeders and industry stakeholders to translate research into on-farm benefits for producers.

Throughout the two days, participants showcased cutting-edge research and practical innovations focused on improving productivity, resilience and sustainability of dairy cattle, calves, heifers, meat animals, sheep and goats. Sessions combined scientific findings with discussions on implementation pathways so that Livestock Genomics advances can reach farmers and extension services across diverse Pakistani production systems.

Organizers and speakers stressed that scaling genomic technologies will require coordinated policy support, capacity building and public-private partnerships. By turning genomic insight into actionable breeding and management strategies, LGGC-2025 aimed to move Pakistan closer to a more sustainable, efficient and climate-resilient livestock sector.
