Parliament Acts on Water Scarcity and Food Security
On 9 December 2025 a meeting on national challenges related to water scarcity and food security was held at Parliament House in Islamabad, chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Members of the National Assembly attended alongside the Chairman of WAPDA, Lieutenant General (R) Muhammad Saeed, and senior officials from the Ministry of Water Resources. Opposition members were specially invited to join deliberations given the sensitivity of the subject.
The Speaker stressed that water scarcity is one of the most serious national issues and urged urgent, effective measures from all stakeholders. He said a comprehensive national strategy must be formulated through collective deliberation and highlighted the need for national unity and collaborative efforts to find sustainable solutions.
During the session the Chairman WAPDA delivered a detailed briefing on the country’s water challenges, available reservoirs, ongoing projects and future requirements. Members were informed about current initiatives and the technical and infrastructure gaps that need attention to manage water scarcity and protect agricultural output.
Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq underscored that safeguarding Pakistan’s future depends on protecting water resources and addressing food security challenges through inclusive dialogue and joint decision-making. The meeting aimed to set a cooperative parliamentary approach to translate briefings and recommendations into coordinated policy and action.
