Traders and shopkeepers in Rawalpindi have shut down their businesses for three days to support enhanced security arrangements during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Islamabad.
According to the details, the decision, announced by the Markazi Anjuman-e-Tajiran, aims to facilitate smooth operations as foreign dignitaries gather for the high-profile event.
The business community, led by President Shahid Ghafoor Piracha and General Secretary Raja Tauheed, assured full cooperation with local authorities during a meeting at Newtown Police Station.
Senior police officials, including Rawalpindi City Police Officer (CPO) Syed Khalid Hamdani, were present to discuss security measures. The representatives of traders agreed to the closure of shops and businesses across Rawalpindi to boost safety protocols.
CPO Hamdani thanked the traders for their cooperation, stating that security preparations are comprehensive and will ensure the safety of both local residents and foreign delegates attending the SCO summit.
Meanwhile, authorities in Islamabad have also ramped up security efforts, issuing directives to shut down various businesses, including restaurants, cafés, and marriage halls, from October 12 to 16. The move is part of broader efforts to minimize public movement in sensitive areas during the event.
Local police have emphasized that strict action will be taken against businesses that do not comply with the orders. Traders have been asked to submit surety bonds, committing to adhere to the security measures.
In addition to the closures, the government has announced three public holidays in Islamabad and Rawalpindi from October 14 to 16 in connection with the 23rd SCO summit.
