Gilani urges greater focus on Sufi heritage to foster harmony
ISLAMABAD, July 15, 2026: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Wednesday underscored the need to draw upon Pakistan’s rich Sufi heritage to promote tolerance, dialogue and social harmony in society.
Addressing the inauguration of the art exhibition “Sufism & Culture” by artists Roomi and Aiman at the Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), Islamabad, he said the teachings of Sufi saints continued to provide meaningful guidance in dealing with present-day challenges of polarization and intolerance.
The Chairman Senate congratulated PNCA for arranging the exhibition and appreciated the artists for choosing a theme closely linked with Pakistan’s spiritual and cultural traditions.
He said Pakistan was home to one of the richest Sufi traditions in the Muslim world, which had deeply shaped the country’s poetry, music, architecture, languages and folklore. He observed that the lasting message of Sufism was rooted in respect, compassion and coexistence, values which were increasingly relevant in today’s world.
Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani said the teachings of Sufi saints reminded humanity that respect was stronger than hatred, dialogue was more enduring than confrontation, and coexistence was more rewarding than exclusion.
He stressed that these timeless principles could contribute to building societies that were more peaceful, inclusive and resilient.
The Chairman Senate also lauded the artistic work of Roomi and Aiman, saying their contributions reflected how Pakistan’s cultural heritage continued to inspire contemporary expression and helped connect younger generations with lasting spiritual values.
He further appreciated PNCA and all those who played a role in making the exhibition possible.
The event was attended by artists, cultural figures, diplomats, art enthusiasts and distinguished guests from different walks of life.
