ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Bar Council has announced its support for Jamaat-e-Islami’s countrywide strike scheduled for September 3 against the petroleum levy.
In a statement issued on September 2, Islamabad Bar Council Vice Chairman Chaudhry Asif Irfan, Advocate Supreme Court, said Jamaat-e-Islami’s call for a nationwide strike against the petroleum levy was in the public interest and the bar council fully supported it.
He said heavy taxes on petroleum products and the petroleum levy were causing a continuous rise in inflation, making life difficult for the common man. He urged the government to provide immediate relief instead of placing more burden on the people.
Chaudhry Asif Irfan said expensive electricity bills and issues related to independent power producers had also created serious difficulties for the public and the business community. He said the government should review agreements with IPPs and take effective steps to ensure the provision of affordable electricity to citizens.
The vice chairman said that while supporting the September 3 countrywide strike, traders, lawyers and other segments of society should raise their voice for the resolution of public issues.
