Pakistani snooker champion Mohammad Asif returned to Karachi on Sunday following his recent triumph at the IBSF World Snooker Championship in Qatar, but his arrival was met with a subdued reception.
Asif, who secured his third world title after defeating an Iranian opponent in the final, expressed disappointment over the absence of any government officials to celebrate his achievement.
Despite the presence of officials from the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA), including its chairman Alamgir Shaikh, Asif lamented the lack of federal or provincial representation.
Mohammad Asif highlighted that consistent support from the PBSA was invaluable, especially the encouragement of Shaikh throughout his journey to the title.
Reflecting on his path to victory, Asif acknowledged the initial challenges he faced but noted that his confidence grew as the tournament progressed.
A tough match against Qatari player Ahmed Saif served as a turning point, giving him the momentum needed to carry him through to his ultimate win.
Asif called for greater government recognition and incentives for world-class athletes, emphasizing the importance of motivating champions who represent Pakistan internationally.
He remains focused on securing a fourth world title to further establish his legacy in the sport.
When asked about his relationships with Indian players, Asif described a “cordial” atmosphere, noting mutual interest in opportunities to compete in each other’s countries, reflecting sportsmanship beyond national borders.
