Minister, Zakat Foundation America CEO Review Poverty Alleviation Cooperation
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Syed Imran Ahmad Shah met Halil Demir, Founder and CEO of Zakat Foundation of America, at the ministry on October 17 to review prospects for cooperation in poverty reduction, social protection and humanitarian assistance.
Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) CEO Nadir Gul Barech and representatives of Zakat Foundation Pakistan also attended the meeting.
According to the discussions, the two sides examined possible joint initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable communities, improving access to essential services and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for disadvantaged segments of society.
The meeting focused on potential support measures for widows, orphaned children, persons with disabilities and deserving families facing economic hardship. Participants noted the importance of coordinated efforts among government institutions, development organisations and humanitarian agencies to respond to the needs of vulnerable populations and strengthen community-level support systems.
Areas identified for possible cooperation included education, healthcare, women’s economic empowerment, skills development, employment generation and disaster relief. These sectors were discussed as key parts of a wider poverty alleviation approach designed to help individuals and families improve their living conditions and move towards greater economic stability.
Speaking during the meeting, Federal Minister Syed Imran Ahmad Shah stressed the need for sustainable poverty reduction. He said financial assistance alone could not fully address the challenges faced by disadvantaged communities, adding that education, vocational skills, employment opportunities and access to economic resources were essential to enabling people to improve their livelihoods and achieve long-term self-reliance.
The discussions also underlined the importance of linking vulnerable families with initiatives that meet their immediate needs while also supporting long-term social and economic development. Cooperation in education and healthcare was viewed as a way to address essential community requirements, while skills training and livelihood support could help create pathways to better household incomes and financial independence.
Women’s economic empowerment was also discussed as a possible area of collaboration, especially through opportunities that could help women acquire marketable skills and strengthen their ability to support their families. Cooperation in disaster relief was also considered important for improving the coordination of humanitarian assistance for communities affected by emergencies and natural disasters.
The presence of PPAF and Zakat Foundation Pakistan representatives provided an opportunity to consider coordination among stakeholders already working in poverty alleviation and community development. Participants discussed how greater coordination could help identify common priorities, explore complementary programmes and direct assistance to communities with significant needs.
Both sides agreed to strengthen coordination and explore further avenues of cooperation in poverty reduction, social protection and humanitarian welfare. The meeting reflected a shared interest in practical approaches to supporting vulnerable populations and expanding opportunities for disadvantaged families.
The discussions highlighted the need for a comprehensive poverty alleviation strategy combining immediate humanitarian assistance with education, healthcare, skills development and livelihood opportunities, with the aim of addressing urgent needs while promoting more sustainable improvements in the lives of vulnerable communities.
