Punjab Accelerates Lumpy Skin Disease Vaccination

A high-level meeting at the Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Department reviewed control and containment measures for Lumpy Skin Disease across the province. Provincial Minister for Livestock and Agriculture Syed Ashiq Hussain Karmani chaired the session, joined by senior officials including Special Secretary South Punjab Asad Naeem, Additional Secretary Technical Dr. Usman Tahir, Director General Research, Director General Extension Dr. Muhammad Ashraf and Director Communication Dr. Haider Ali Khan.
The Director General Research delivered a detailed briefing on the current pattern of Lumpy Skin Disease cases in Punjab and outlined an emergency vaccination strategy. Authorities confirmed that ring vaccination is being deployed immediately around reported outbreaks to halt further spread and that there is no shortfall in vaccine supplies. Field teams are being mobilised to ensure farmers receive vaccinations and on-site support without delay.
Director General Extension Dr. Muhammad Ashraf said the department is conducting insecticide spraying at livestock markets and interprovincial checkposts to limit vector transmission. The Directorate of Communication is running a sustained outreach campaign advising livestock owners to protect animals from mosquitoes and flies, identified as major drivers of Lumpy Skin Disease transmission.
The ADDRS farmer app has been highlighted as an effective tool for rapid reporting, enabling field response teams to reach affected areas quickly after cases are logged. Officials noted that timely alerts through the app have improved response times and coordination at the district level.
Addressing the meeting, Provincial Minister Syed Ashiq Hussain Karmani affirmed the Punjab government’s commitment to stand with farmers, directing officials to intensify vaccination and awareness drives and to ensure immediate relief reaches every affected community. The department has emphasised close monitoring and rapid intervention to protect livestock and support rural livelihoods.
