Global Knowledge Exchange Advances Low-Carbon Steel Solutions

Global leaders, government officials, and industry experts convened in Pohang, Republic of Korea, for the first Global Knowledge Exchange on Low-Carbon Steel, aiming to tackle the urgent issue of reducing emissions from the steel sector.
The event brought together more than 80 participants from various countries, representing both the Global South and North. It was organized by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), in collaboration with the Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Pohang City Council, and major industry stakeholders. Over the course of two and a half days, participants engaged in discussions centered around decarbonizing the steel industry, which currently contributes approximately 8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Key topics included the adoption of hydrogen-based steelmaking technologies, the implementation of carbon pricing mechanisms, and setting effective emissions standards. Experts and leaders examined the challenges involved in transforming this critical sector, as well as the significant opportunities that arise from adopting cleaner, more sustainable industrial processes.
The exchange marked an important step in shaping the global agenda around industrial decarbonization, highlighting the need for collaboration between governments, industry, and technical experts to achieve meaningful progress towards climate targets.
