Digitizing Pakistan Nursing Council to Boost Merit
The federal government has decided to fully digitalize the Pakistan Nursing Council during a meeting chaired by Federal Health Minister Syed Mustafa Kamal, attended by the federal secretary and other senior officials. The cabinet-level decision directs that all council functions be computerized as soon as possible to minimize human intervention and safeguard merit and transparency through nursing digitalization.
The minister emphasized that nursing is the backbone of the health system and highlighted a critical shortfall of roughly 900,000 nurses in Pakistan, while the global requirement stands at about 2.5 million qualified nurses. He pledged to rebuild the sector on modern lines, restore lost credibility through reforms, and develop the council into an institution that meets international standards.
Officials at the meeting were instructed to fast-track implementation so that the benefits of nursing digitalization—reduced manual processes, clearer accountability and improved transparency—reach stakeholders without delay. The move is presented as a key step toward strengthening Pakistan’s health workforce and aligning the nursing sector with global expectations.
The minister reiterated his commitment to comprehensive reforms, saying the modernization drive will focus on creating reliable, merit‑based systems that support nurses and enhance public trust in regulatory institutions.
