IIUI Female Campus Launches Plantation Drive

The Department of Environmental Science at the International Islamic University Islamabad organised a plantation drive at the Female Campus in collaboration with the Green Youth Movement (GYM) Club, campus administration and the Directorate of Student Affairs. The event began with a recitation from the Holy Quran and set the tone for a day focused on environmental care and community participation.

Dr. Syeda Maria Ali, Chairperson of the Department of Environmental Science, delivered opening remarks stressing the long-term benefits of such initiatives for campus ecology and student engagement. Dr. Sarah Amir, Focal Person of the GYM Club and Incharge Academic Affairs, underscored the influence of community-driven action in protecting local environments and nurturing stewardship among youth.

Support from campus leadership helped shape the event, with Prof. Dr. Amna Mahmood, Incharge Female Campus, Dr. Inam-ul-Haq, Director Administration, and Dr. Rukhsana Tariq, Student Advisor, noting that plantation campaigns assist in climate change mitigation, enhance biodiversity and improve the look and usability of campus spaces.

Led by Batch 29 students under the supervision of Dr. Sidra Aman Rana, participants planted 14 species as part of the plantation drive, including periwinkle, basil, jasmine, Aloe vera, marigold and a variety of seasonal flowers. The practical activity offered students hands-on experience in planting and maintaining green cover on campus grounds.

Planting took place on the department’s main lawn and outside Gate 3 of the Shared Block, creating new green pockets in high-visibility areas. At the close of the activity, Dr. Inam-ul-Haq held a short quiz to engage students further and presented certificates of appreciation to those with notable participation.

The Department of Environmental Science thanked the university administration, along with horticulture and estate management teams, for their logistical and technical support. The successful plantation drive reaffirmed the campus commitment to environmental stewardship and encouraged continued collaboration between students and university departments to expand green initiatives.
