Accelerating AI Literacy Across Pakistan Universities

The Higher Education Commission of Pakistan has partnered with Meta, the National Computing Education Accreditation Council, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication and atomcamp to launch a nationwide AI literacy programme targeting non-Computer Science faculty across Pakistani universities. The initiative aims to expand understanding of core artificial intelligence concepts and practical digital skills beyond traditional computing departments to better prepare graduates for the global digital economy.

The programme will directly upskill 350 faculty members through a tailored curriculum that emphasises foundational AI competency, ethical use, and discipline-specific integration. By strengthening faculty capacity in AI literacy, participating universities are expected to incorporate modern digital tools and teaching approaches into diverse courses, from social sciences to business and the arts.

The launch took place during the event ‘Future in Focus: AI and Innovation’, hosted by Meta in collaboration with the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. Representatives from HEC included Prof. Dr. M Ali Nasir, Adviser (Research and Innovation), Mr. Naveed Tahir, Director (IT) HEC, and Mr. Muhammad Azeem Khan, Project Manager HEDP, who outlined the role of the programme in accelerating AI adoption in higher education across Pakistan.

With Meta and partners providing technical support and training resources, the programme seeks to create a sustainable model for continuous professional development in AI literacy for faculty. The focus on non-Computer Science instructors recognises the cross-cutting impact of AI and aims to ensure students across disciplines graduate with relevant digital competencies for tomorrow’s job market.
